Awards/Achievements: 1) Client turned advocate; 2) Board member and club coordinator at Young Mothers’ Club, The Princess Center
I was born on July 17, 1995 and now I am 18 years old. Currently, I live with my parents and daughter, who is 1 year old. I am a teenage mother and coordinator of the Young Mothers’ Club next to the Princess Center. I finished high school last year. I am now an undergraduate student of History and Chinese language.
I was one of the clients and project beneficiaries of the Princess Center between 2011 and 2012. At that time, I was a victim of domestic violence and was repeatedly beaten by my boyfriend (the father of my daughter). Initially, I just wanted to talk with someone about my problems and try to find a solution for them. Then, I heard about the Princess Center from my friend. At the same time, my boyfriend took my daughter away from me, meaning that I couldn’t see her for a few weeks. With the great support of social workers at the Princess Center, I safely took back my daughter and ended my relationship with my daughter’s father.
After receiving assistance from the Princess Center, I have realized that there are thousands of girls, especially teenage girls, facing problems such as early marriage, early pregnancy, unsafe abortion, early birth, gender-based violence, and sex discrimination. Apart from understanding these realities, I have realized that there are various ways to solve all these problems. The Princess Center really helped me to understand that we girls can help each other and support each other as well.
I decided to help other girls like me and became a member of the Young Mothers’ Club next to the Princess Center. A few months later, I was elected as one of the board members of the club. We organize lots of community activities in order to support and strengthen other teenage mothers in our club. We also reach out to other teenage mothers who don’t have any information about the center and club. Currently, I am working as a club coordinator and paying attention to the ongoing activities of the club.
